Remains of Shofukaku

Shofukaku was a villa built prior to the end of the 1800s by Hara Zenzaburo, of the first generation of the Hara family. It was used to entertain the family’s important guests with its magnificent view of the ocean and Mt. Fuji. In 1916, the time of Hara Sankei, Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore stayed at the villa for two months.

Shimomura Kanzan, one of the artists supported by Sankei, painted the fusuma sliding doors and walls. The entire house was, however, lost in the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923.

The current building on the site was constructed in 1964 as a scenic lookout.
