Hakuuntei

Tangible Cultural Property designated by Yokohama City
This retreat for Hara Sankei was built in 1920 to his own design. Cypress bark is used for the roof and thin sheets of wood are used for the eaves. Inside, tatami mats of a larger size common in the Kansai region cover the floor, matching the style of the adjacent Rinshunkaku. Though in a teahouse style using traditional construction methods and carefully chosen materials, the house also incorporates modern elements at that time, such as a Western-style room with a table and chairs, a telephone compartment, and a bathroom with a shower.
