Important National Cultural Property

This building is said to have been constructed in 1603 on the premises of Fushimijo Castle in Kyoto by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the leader of samurai in the early 17th century. Inside are fusuma sliding doors with paintings by artist Kaiho Yusho and transoms with flat openwork in chrysanthemum patterns.

The building was rebuilt in Sankeien in 1918 after being moved from Konzoin, a branch of Mimurotoji Temple in Uji City, Kyoto, along with the Shunsoro teahouse. It is said that when it was relocated, every disassembled member and component was carefully wrapped in cloth for transport.
